Abstrakt: The article presents a critique of the 1717 English narrative poem "Eloisa to Abelard," by Alexander Pope, focusing on its thematic use of the apostrophe figure of speech. Topics addressed include discussion of the diverse features which the figure of speech can perform rhetorically, specific recurring instances of apostrophe within the poem, and discussion of how Eloisa's communications exemplify the concepts of presence and absence.
