Abstrakt: The article discusses the role of uniform design in the recruitment of women for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard during World War II. Particular focus is given to women veterans' use of their uniforms in forming and explaining their wartime identities. Details on the designer uniforms worn by volunteer forces known as Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) and Semper Paratus, Always Ready (SPARs) are presented.
