Abstract: The article is dedicated to the least studied group of onyms in Ukrainian linguistics - animal nicknames - and was conducted using the material of a dialect speech. The authors focused on names of domestic animals motivated by plant names in the north-western Ukrainian dialects. These names appear as a result of a semantic derivation which is based on a metaphorical transition of the plant name to the animal name according to certain associative connections between the donor (plant names) and the recipient (animal nicknames) zones. It is ascertained that owners usually assign a certain nickname to a pet taking into account a feature that characterizes the animal and at the same time it makes it possible to distinguish the animal from the others. |
