Abstract: This paper provides an overview of the discovery and rediscovery of the dwarf planet, Ceres. The main part of this article deals with Gauss- ´s method for constructing an approximation for orbits of bodies, described in the book Theory of the Motion of the Heavenly Bodies Moving about the Sun in Conic Sections. Gauss explained clearly the problem of determining an orbit from a minimum number of observations over a short of time. His method remains valid, even now, in modern astronomical computations. |
