Abstrakt: Abstract: May Day celebrations oflabour were first held in 1890, after which lst May gradually established itself as a fixture in the annual ca len dar of the organized labour movement. This study focuses on the gradual relocation of May Day celebrations in Ostrava from dosed venues (pubs and private gardens) to public spaces. The study analyzes this shift in venue as part of the wider context of the emancipation of the working classes and their gradual integration into civil society; the Social Democrats in Moravská Ostrava began to organize May Day processions in the city centre, culminating in the symbolic occupation of public spaces in response to the fundamental changes that swept through the municipal political scene after Czechoslovakia's independence in October 1918.
