Abstrakt: A YOUNG Scot has pulled off one of the biggest upsets in diving - by beating Olympic medallist Tom Daley. James Heatly, 16, and team-mate Sam Thornton, 17, defeated the former world champion and Daniel Goodfellow, 17, in the three-metre synchronised springboard event at the British Gas National Cup at Southend, Essex. James, of Balerno, Midlothian, and Thornton, from Leeds, achieved their astonishing victory despite training together only three times. By beating 19-year-old Daley, who won bronze at London 2012, Edinburgh Diving Club member James has earned enough qualifying points for a place at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer. The teenager, grandson of Commonwealth champion diver Sir Peter Heatly, said yesterday: 'The gold in the synchronised event was completely unexpected because we're a very new pair. 'With all Tom has done for the sport, he's someone to idolise but my hero is my grandfather. He recommended diving and that's why I took it up.' [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
