Simon White last spoke to his famous older brother, Marco Pierre White, two months ago. That faltering conversation - their first in ten years - was conducted in a confused mixture of broken English and Italian, and has not been repeated since. 'If I had the chance,' says Simon, 'I would just like to say to Marco: "Let's meet and talk about it, so we can sort things out."' The fact that these two men shared the same parents yet live such very different lives is a stark reminder of just what might have been. While celebrity chef and restaurateur White grew up to be the youngest Briton ever to win three coveted Michelin stars, his younger brother, Simon, works at an out-of-town shopping centre near his home in Ovada, north of Genoa. They were divided as children by the most heartbreaking tragedy imaginable. When White was just six years old, his beautiful Italian mother, Maria-Rosa Gallina, gave birth to Simon - only to die from a brain haemorrhage 13 days later. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
