The article presents a study which examines the long-term physiological responses of tree ring growth patterns and stable isotopes to fertilization. The study utilized a controlled fertilization experiment which started in 1964 in Washington State with the application of three levels of nitrogen fertilizer. The study revealed an increase of the basal area increment (BAI) in the highest treatment to twofold and a significant increase of BAI was identified for 20 years. It also indicates that the stable isotopes in tree rings determine the physiological responses over the lifetime of the tree. |
