Prior literature on natural farming lacks realworld evidence across multiple seasons quantifying impacts on smallholder socioeconomic outcomes. To systematically review comparative outcomes for farmers adopting natural versus conventional practices. We searched electronic databases identifying 2,146 records, with 12 more from manual sources. After screening 2,158 records and reviewing 36 fulltexts, 8 studies met inclusion criteria. Reasons for exclusion included lack of conventional comparator (n=12), incomplete production cycles (n=8), and solely agronomic outcomes (n=5). Meta-analysis was not possible due to heterogeneity and narrative synthesis was performed. The 8 studies encompassed 1,472 smallholders practicing natural (n=725) or conventional (n=747) farming. Overall results indicated comparable/improved profits but instability concerns and increased labor burdens that tempered non-inferiority conclusions. Current limited evidence offers guarded optimism for natural farming financial viability but lingering questions on stability, equity, and living standards merit focus in further research and policy initiatives promoting ecological practices.
