Using high-resolution 4D imaging, Kidokoro et al. identify two key cell behaviors shaping the early heart tube. They further show that left-specific Nodal signaling promotes these cell behaviors, thereby driving tissue-scale left-right asymmetry.

AimsPERM1 is a striated muscle-specific regulator of mitochondrial bioenergetics. We previously demonstrated that PERM1 is downregulated in the failing heart and that PERM1 positively regulates metabolic genes known as targets of the transcription fa

The transcriptional regulatory machinery in mitochondrial bioenergetics is complex and is still not completely understood. We previously demonstrated that the histone methyltransferase Smyd1 regulates mitochondrial energetics. Here, we identified Per

To map the cellular topography of the rare 3-O-sulfated structural motif of heparan sulfate (HS), we constructed quantum dot-based probes for antithrombin and FGF2, which reveal widely different distribution of the targeted HS motifs. The technology

Xylosides are small synthetic molecules consisting of a xylose molecule attached to an aglycone group and serve as primers in the assembly of core protein free glycosaminoglycans using cellular machinery. Synthetic xylosides hold great promise in man

Clockwise rotation of the primitive heart tube, a process regulated by restricted left-sided Nodal signaling, is the first morphological manifestation of left-right asymmetry. How Nodal regulates cell behaviors to drive asymmetric morphogenesis remai
