Protamine is a cationic antimicrobial peptide, which inhibits or kills a number of Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. Electrostatic interactions between the outer leaflet of the membrane and protamine are t

Scanning tunneling microscope measurements were performed on UHV cleaved samples of pure and silver intercalated 2H-${\mathrm{NbSe}}_{2}$ at room temperature. Samples intercalated to stage 2 showed a \ensuremath{\surd}13${\mathit{a}}_{0}$\ifmmode\tim

A scanning tunneling microscope monitored the time dependence of both the expansion and surface morphology changes of 1–2 mm palladium spheres exposed to 0.5 atm hydrogen gas. The surfaces were initially smooth except for 2–10 nm high steps separ

We describe a simple device for the calibration of atomic force microscope cantilevers and micromachined springs. The device measures the deflection of the cantilevers in response to known forces that are derived from calibrated macroscopic cantileve

With the help of a tunneling capacitance dilatometer we have measured the thermal expansion near the Peierls temperature (${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{C}}$) in three charge-density-wave materials. For the layered compound 2H-${\mathrm{TaSe}}_{2}$, the expa

We report measurements of the static Young's modulus of orthorhombic TaS${}_{3}$ in the drifting charge-density-wave state. In contrast to vibrating-reed and ultrasonic measurements of the Young's modulus, the static modulus softening was observed to

We have developed a simple, two‐dimensional piezoelectric tube device which uses the inertial slider method to achieve remote micropositioning in the vertical and horizontal directions. The motion of the slider car occurs with respect to a quartz r

The inner and outer surfaces of the sheath of Methanospirillum hungatei GP1 have been imaged for the first time by using a bimorph scanning tunneling microscope (STM) on platinum-coated or uncoated specimens to a nominal resolution in height of ca. 0

A simple piezoelectric tube device is described which allows remote micropositioning in two dimensions with step sizes from ∼50 to ∼3000 nm. Speeds up to 0.1 mm/s have been achieved. It uses the principle of inertial sliding of a mass on an accel

We report results on Scanning Force Microscopy of the cell sheath of an archae bacterium. Uncoated complete sheath as well as sheath fragments were imaged. The smallest structural features observed were 18 nm apart and between 0.5 and 1 nm in height.
