A multimode bend for four TE modes is designed via topological optimization. The device can operate from 1520-1580 nm with excess losses lower than 0.80 dB and inter-mode crosstalk lower than ‒15.52 dB.

An ultra-broadband waveguide taper for TE0 and TE1 modes is designed via achromatic metalenses. The device can operate from 1550 nm to 2150 nm with insertion losses < 1.25 dB and mode purity > 92%.

A dual-mode power splitter with arbitrary-ratio is designed via a T-branch embedded with nanoholes. The device can operate from 1500 to 1600 nm with excess losses < 0.42 dB and inter-mode crosstalks < ‒15.64 dB.

A four-mode waveguide crossing with footprint of only 7.5×7.5 μm2 is demonstrated on silicon photonic platform. The device insertion loss is less than 0.85 dB, and the crosstalk is below-18 dB for 1500-1580 nm.
