We demonstrate the rotating-crystal method in femtosecond x-ray diffraction. Structural dynamics of a photoexcited bismuth crystal is mapped in a pump-probe scheme by measuring intensity changes of many Bragg reflections simultaneously.

Transient electron density maps are derived from x-ray diffraction patterns of photoexcited [Fe(bpy)3]2+(PF6−)2 powder. Upon photoexcitation, the 5T2 quintet state reveals a charge transfer from the PF6− ions and from the Fe atoms to neighboring

Transient electron density maps of potassium dihydrogen phosphate(KH2PO4, KDP) are derived from femtosecond x-ray powder diffraction patterns. Upon photoexcitation, the low-frequency TO soft mode is elongated impulsively and modulates the electronic

We measure the transient strain profile in a nanoscale multilayer system composed of Yttrium, Holmium and Niobium after laser excitation using ultrafast X-ray diffraction. The strain propagation through each layer is determined by transient changes o

Monitoring structural changes in ferroelectric thin films during electric field-induced polarization switching is important for a full microscopic understanding of the coupled motion of charges, atoms and domain walls. We combine standard ferroelectr

We study gadolinium thin films as a model system for ferromagnets with negative thermal expansion. Ultrashort laser pulses heat up the electronic subsystem and we follow the transient strain via ultrafast X-ray diffraction. In terms of a simple Gruen

We investigate the heat transport through a rare earth multilayer system composed of Yttrium (Y), Dysprosium (Dy) and Niobium (Nb) by ultrafast X-ray diffraction. This is an example of a complex heat flow problem on the nanoscale, where several diffe

Recent theoretical advances offer an exact, first-principle theory of jamming criticality in infinite dimension as well as universal scaling relations between critical exponents in all dimensions. For packings of frictionless spheres near the jamming

It has been recently pointed out by Farr and Groot (arXiv:0912.0852) and by Kyrylyuk and Philipse (Prog. Colloid Polym. Sci., 2010, in press) that our theoretical result for the jamming density of a binary mixture of hard spheres (arXiv:0903.5099) ap
