Autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) is a chronic thyroid disorder wherein overstimulated CD4+T lymphocytes activate CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes, thereby inducing Fas-mediated apoptosis of thyrocytes and reducing the hormonal activity of the thyroid gland.
