In the title compound, C8H3F4NO3, the carboxy group lies nearly in the plane of the ring with a C—C—C—O torsion angle of −10.5 (4)°. The carbamoyl group is almost perpendicular to the benzene ring [C—C—C—O torsion angle = 82.2 (4) °].

The first total synthesis of the furanolactam fuscain is reported. The key step in the synthesis was the formation of seven-membered lactam by acylation of a furan ring using the mild Lewis acid CuSO4·5H2O.
