Abstract.: Dimethylsphingosine (DMS) was first reported as an inhibitor of protein kinase C and later has been used as a specific inhibitor of sphingosine kinase. Furthermore, its anti-cancer effect has become a basis for development of chemotherapy.

Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) acts on a set of G protein-coupled receptors in the plasma membrane and also as a second messenger in certain cell types. There are two possible pathways to mobilize intracellular Ca2+ concentration by S1P. One is throug

Fetal bovine serum (FBS) was found to protect Jurkat T cells from LPC-induced cytotoxicity. Twenty micromolar LPC-induced cytotoxicity of 80–90% of the cells in media without FBS for 3 h, whereas 50–70% in media with 0.5% FBS. However, LPC-induce

Jurkat T cells were found to adhere to a tissue culture flask or cover glass when 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) was withdrawn. However, the cells adhered to extracellular matrix, especially fibronectin, regardless of the presence of FBS. We hypothesiz

Ginseng has an anti-cancer effect in several cancer models. As a mechanism study of ginsenoside-induced growth inhibition in cancer cells, we measured change of membrane potential in prostate cancer and glioma cells by ginsenosides, active constituen

Calcium is a ubiquitous second messenger controlling a broad range of cellular functions. We previously observed that N,N-dimethyl-D-ribo-phytosphingosine (DMPH) and lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) induced Ca2+ influx across the plasma membrane in U937
