Energy landscapes are a powerful tool for describing the kinetics of complex systems at the atomic scale. However, because of the large disparity of time scales of kinetic processes, it can be difficult to calculate the evolution of properties over l

Stretched exponential relaxation is a ubiquitous feature of homogeneous glasses. The stretched exponential decay function can be derived from the diffusion-trap model, which predicts certain critical values of the fractional stretching exponent, β .

The degree of relaxation in any glass sample is a governing property in every property of the glass. It plays an important role in every major glass product commercially available, but has required individual groups to develop their own relaxation co

Functional glasses play a critical role in current and developing technologies. These materials have traditionally been designed empirically through trial-and-error experimentation. However, here we report recent advancements in the design of new gla

Spectrally-efficient optical communications systems employ polarization division multiplexing (PDM) as a practical solution, in order to double the capacity of a fiber link. Polarization demultiplexing can be performed electronically, using polarizat

Chemically strengthened glass features a surface compression and a balancing central tension (CT) in the interior of the glass. A greater CT is usually associated with a higher level of stored elastic energy in the glass. During a fracture event, rel

Design, test, and performance requirement and analysis for a polarization-mode-dispersion compensator (PMDC) with four degrees of freedom is presented. The performance is analyzed on the basis of time-integrated and time-resolved bit-error ratio (BER

In this paper, we review the fundamental advantages and drawbacks of 40-Gb/s systems from a fiber manufacturer's perspective. Based on modeling, experimental results, and fundamental understanding, we correlate the fiber design parameters with the ex

We investigate transmitter and receiver imperfections in coherent QPSK systems, and how their impact can be mitigated using DSP algorithms. Quadrature imbalance was found to be a particularly significant effect that will require compensation.
