Two isomeric compounds, trans- and cis-K[Co(CO3)2(py)2]·3H2O, have been isolated from a reaction mixture of the [Co(CO3)3]3− ion with pyridine. The absorption spectrum of the trans complex revealed distinct splitting of the second absorption band.

Two new dicarbonato complexes, K[Co(CO3)2(bpy)]·2H2O and K[Co(CO3)2(phen)]·H2O, have been prepared by the method starting from the [Co(Co3)3]3− complex and resolved by means of diastereoisomer formation.
