The Ti/Cr clusters, from dimers to pentamers, on a single-layer h-BN are investigated using first-principles calculations. The relatively weak interaction with the h-BN monolayer makes it possible to build versatile and interesting 3D nanostructures.

A controlled chemical reaction on a specific bond in a single molecule is an inevitable step toward atomic engineering and fabrication. Here, we explored the debromination of a single 9,10-dibromoanthracene (DBA) molecule on a surface as stimulated b

We investigate the orientation switching of individual azobenzene molecules adsorbed on a Au(111) surface using a laser-assisted scanning tunneling microscope (STM). It is found that the rotational motion of the molecule can be regulated by both samp

Patterned 2D materials with layer-controlled thickness and precise lateral resolution are of great potential for many applications. Laser etching is a promising technique for large-scale patterning of 2D materials, but better control in film thicknes

Two low-energy excitations of a single water molecule are observed via inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy, where a significant enhancement is achieved by attaching the molecule to the tip apex in a scanning tunneling microscope. Density functi

The orientation switching of a single azobenzene molecule on Au(111) surface excited by tunneling electrons and/or photons has been demonstrated in recent experiments. Here we investigate the rotation behavior of this molecular rotor by first-princip

Probing the optical Stark effect at the single-molecule or atomic scale is crucial for understanding many photoinduced chemical and physical processes on surfaces. Here, we report a study about the optical Stark effect of single atomic defects on a T

The key to fully understanding water-solid interfaces relies on the microscopic nature of hydrogen bond networks, including their atomic structures, interfacial interactions, and dynamic behaviors. Here, we report the observation of two types of simp
