Chronic alcohol consumption leads to a spectrum of liver disease that is associated with significant global mortality and morbidity. Alcohol is known to deplete hepatic vitamin A content, which has been linked to the pathogenesis of alcoholic liver d

We previously reported that mice with skin-specific deletion of stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 (Scd1) recapitulated the skin phenotype and hypermetabolism observed in mice with a whole-body deletion of Scd1. In this study, we first performed a diet-induce

Retinoids are used clinically to treat a number of hyper-proliferative disorders and have been shown in experimental animals to attenuate vascular occlusive diseases, presumably through nuclear receptors bound to retinoic acid response elements (RARE

Hepatic stellate cell (HSC) lipid droplets are specialized organelles for the storage of retinoid, accounting for 50-60% of all retinoid present in the body. When HSCs activate, retinyl ester levels progressively decrease and the lipid droplets are l

Retinoids can act as transcriptional regulators to regulate cell proliferation, differentiation, and other processes. Here, the authors show that uncompromised vitamin A (retinoid) metabolism and signaling in alveolar lipofibroblasts, endothelial and

Summary: Vitamin A is a micronutrient essential for vertebrate animals maintained in homeostatic balance in the body; however, little is known about the control of this balance. This study investigated whether the hypothalamus, a key integrative brai

Background Transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR‐CM) is an important cause of heart failure in older individuals. Misfolding and deposition of transthyretin or prealbumin protein causes ATTR‐CM in the context of a normal (wild‐type) or var

Perturbed vitamin-A metabolism is associated with type 2 diabetes and mitochondrial dysfunction that are pathophysiologically linked to the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM). However, the mechanism, by which vitamin A might regulate mitoch

Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is a common reason for spine surgery in which ligamentum flavum is resected. Transthyretin (TTR) amyloid is an often unrecognized and potentially modifiable mechanism for LSS that can also cause TTR cardiac amyloidosis. A
