In this paper we make comparison between a well-known theoretical model of light propagation through racetrack resonator and experimentally obtained results. Observed differences are studied and some original modifications are made in the existing mo

A novel method for a mobile phone centric observation of a user’s facing direction is presented. To estimate this direction, our proposed technique exploits the acceleration pattern that can be measured by a smartphone as the user is walking. For a

The mid-infrared spectral region is interesting for bio-chemical sensing, environmental monitoring, free space communications, or military applications. Silicon is relatively low-loss from 1.2 to 8 μm and from 24 to 100 μm, and therefore silicon ph

Coupling light from an optical fibre to small optical waveguides is particularly problematic in semiconductors, since the refractive index of the silica fibre is very different from that of a semiconductor waveguide. There have been several published

The field of Silicon Photonics has gained a significant amount of momentum in recent years. Announcements of high speed modulators and cost-efficient light sources in the Silicon-on-insulator material system have helped to make Silicon Photonics a vi

The single-mode optical rib waveguide is a fundamental building block for many, more complex optical circuits. Recent modelling has been provided in the literature that has investigated polarisation and modal properties of small, deeplyetched rib wav

Recently, we have realised a polarisation independent optical racetrack resonator whose resonant dips for TE and TM align to better than 1pm. The devices had a Free Spectral Range (FSR) of only several hundred picometres. This in large part was to th
