A novel approach for the simulation of conformal microstrip patch antenna arrays is presented. 1×2 and 1×4 microstrip arrays operating at 16 GHz were designed and their radiation characteristics were simulated and analyzed as a function of bending.

A nonsaturable component to the 980 nm excited state absorption (ESA) is found in Er3+‐doped silica glass fibers. This anomalous behavior of the ESA provides a way of quantitatively characterizing the degree of clustering in these glasses. It is fo

We have developed an approach to multiple-access lasercom that adopts the commercial paradigm of sharing the most expensive terminal resources among all users. Space-time division multiple access (STDMA), analogous to an optical space-time switch, ho

The condition for cw lasing in a four-level system is generalized to include situations where the upper laser level relaxes to the ground state as well as to the lower laser level. It is found that cw lasing is possible in certain cases even when the

The Stark levels of the 4I15/2 ground state manifold have been determined for Er3+‐doped fluorozirconate, fluorophosphate, phosphate, and silicate bulk glasses from fluorescence‐line‐narrowing (FLN) measurements at 4.2 K. Splittings between adj

The performance and efficiency of erbium-doped fibers pumped in the 800-nm band has been analyzed using a quantitative amplifier model. Both a silica and a fluorophosphate host were investigated. The analysis showed that under optimized conditions th

An extension of the Judd–Ofelt technique [B. R. Judd, Phys. Rev. 127, 750 (1962)] is introduced in which measured fluorescence branching ratios are incorporated into the calculation of the Judd–Ofelt parameters. It is found that including branchi

The current evidence for clustering of erbium ions in silica glass is reviewed, including experiments on fiber amplifier efficiency, excited state decay, and nonsaturable absorption in Er 3+ pumped at 980 nm. Experiments performed by the authors on n

Excited-state absorption measurements performed at 980 nm in erbium-doped silica fibers provide evidence that Er 3+ ions undergo clustering to varying degrees, depending on glass composition. The technique employed allows a quantitative characterizat

A technique for significantly increasing the pump power in an erbium doped fiber amplifier by multiplexing pump lasers at different wavelengths is demonstrated. Two pump lasers with a wavelength separation of at least 10 nm are combined with an inser
