A new, weighted matrix identification key for 34 largely undisputed species of Synchaeta was created with the aim of providing comparable, detailed and diagnostic character sets for each species that can be applied to live and/or preserved specimens.

The rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for surface-attached, i.e. epizootic, bacteria to ascertain their specific localization and thus find out if we could discern between rotifer and bacterial enzyme

Increasing evidence suggests that bdelloid rotifers regularly undergo horizontal gene transfer, apparently as a surrogate mechanism of genetic exchange in the absence of true sexual reproduction, in part because of their ability to withstand desiccat

Although the phylum Gastrotricha is known and studied for more than 150 years, some cell types, tissues and organ systems are still not well understood in terms of their morphology, ultrastructure, function and role. One of these features is the epid

The morphology of soft-bodied rotifers, including those of Synchaeta spp, can be strongly affected by preparation artefacts including contraction and deformation. The long-standing, valid species S...

Much of the recent literature concerning the threat posed by anthropogenic microscopic pollution has focussed on marine organisms although freshwater environments face the same degree of pollution and therefore risk. Although several studies have doc

Comprehensive re-descriptions of the two morphologically similar species Synchaeta stylata Wierzejski, 1893 and Synchaeta longipes Gosse, 1887 were made with the aim of providing unique and unambiguous morphological character sets for the identificat

A comprehensive re-description of the monogonont rotifer Synchaeta oblonga Ehrenberg, 1832 is presented with the aim of creating a specific and robust suite of characters to identify this species that takes account of its morphological intraspecific

The long-term persistence of the ‘ancient asexual’ bdelloid rotifers, a clade of small aquatic invertebrates, is often tied to their ability to enter anhydrobiosis. This ability has both clear benefits (e.g. survival of desiccating conditions), b
