The high data rates enabled by free-space optical communication links and additional factors, such as the unregulated spectrum, make them an attractive solution in future geostationary feeder link applications with capacities beyond one Terabit per s

The exponentially growing demand for high-speed data transmission is one of the main reasons for the ongoing evolution from fixed and static to link-adaptive systems in fiber-optic communications. The need to maximize the flexibility as well as the c

Conventional modulation formats for single carrier transmission do not provide the flexibility to gradually scale the data rate and spectral efficiency. By using multidimensional pulse-amplitude modulation, fractional numbers of bits per symbol can b

We investigate a realistic integrated multicore system consisting of directly spliced components: homogeneous trench-assisted seven-core fiber with a length of 60 km, cladding-pumped seven-core amplifiers, integrated seven-core isolators, and fiberiz

Combating the destructive effects of power-fading in fiber-optic systems using direct-detection is the key for increasing the transmission rates and/or reach. Some of the solutions used in the past include additional components, e.g., a dispersion-co

A 10.5-Tb/s optical transmission (15 x 100 Gb/s QPSK channels per core) over 2520 km of multicore fiber is achieved using an integrated multicore transmission link consisting of directly spliced multicore components, such as fan-in/fan-out fiber coup

We propose to use multidimensional modulation as flexible mapping technique for software defined optics. The flexible mappings have an optimized constellation shape with regard to the number of amplitude levels and power efficiency. We demonstrate th

We experimentally vary the bandwidth by using multidimensional PAM at a fixed data rate of 112 Gb/s. Optical SSB-filtering and Kramers-Kronig reception enable DWDM transmission with IM/DD over 100 km uncompensated SSMF without in-line amplification.
