We report the synthesis, structural and magnetic characterization of five mononuclear DyIII ion complexes using triphenylphosphine oxide as a monodentate ligand. They have formulae [DyIII(OPPh3)3(NO3)3] (1), [DyIII(OPPh3)4(NO3)2](NO3) (2), [DyIII(OPP

The structural and magnetic properties of a range of new iron(III) bis-tridentate Schiff base complexes are described with emphasis on how intermolecular structural interactions influence spin states and spin crossover (SCO) in these d5 materials. Th

Lanthanoid single-molecule magnets (Ln-SMMs) exhibit slow magnetic relaxation at low temperatures. This arises from an energy barrier to magnetisation reversal associated with the crystal field (CF) splitting of the Ln(III) ion. The magnetic relaxati

Mononuclear lanthanoidate complexes [Bu4N][Ln(QCl4)] have been used as precursors to obtain new heterobimetallic complexes [Ln2Mn(QCl)8]. The change from mononuclear to trinuclear complexes enhances their single molecule magnetic (SMM) behaviour.

The ability to identify promising candidate switchable molecules computationally, prior to synthesis, represents a considerable advance in the development of switchable molecular materials. Even more useful would be the possibility of predicting the
