A newly constructed source of polarized H ± and D ± ions is described. Atomic H or D beams from a dissociator with a cooled nozzle enter a system of two sextupole magnets and several radio-frequency transitions where they are focused and polarized.

A plasma ionizer in which the electrons are heated via electron-cyclotron resonance is used to produce beams of polarized H+ (or D+) ions from spin-polarized H0 (or D0) beams. The plasma is confined axially via a magnetic mirror field and radially by

Moderate power (approx.1 kW) excitation of lower hybrid waves in a linear plasma column is found to increase the reflectivity of the phased waveguide exciter and to change the vertical position of the resonance cone. Probing of the plasma near the mo

A modified version of the standard waveguide grill for exciting lower hybrid plasma waves is proposed. This version, consisting of alternate active and passive elements, permits a number of important engineering simplifications and also reduces the a

Except for the Landau heating experiments at General Atomic the U. S. program on lower hybrid heating in toroidal devices has been relatively inactive for the past two years. However, new and encouraging experimental results are just starting to appe
