Two different mechanism become operative in the cleavage of phenetole by ethyllithium. Furthermore the metallated species adds to ethene or undergoes a condensation reaction to yield a biphenyl derivative.

A product was isolated after dediazotization of the title compound, implying the formation of a benzylic cation from the initially formed 2-alkylbiphenyl-2′-yl enium ion.
