We experimentally demonstrate an actively-filtered receiver for TDM-PON. Bias-current tuning of a DFB-based-filter enables tracking the wavelength-drift of DML under burst-mode operation. We measure >70% reach increase, >5dB sensitivity improvement,

In this paper, the underestimated challenges of the burst-mode operation in the upstream path of time-and-wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical networks are analyzed. Various challenges are disclosed, the influence of the associated physica

We demonstrate two new schemes for DFB optical frequency drift reduction up to 13-GHz, which address issues of previously described methods. Density increase scheme requires only modification of digital data in the preamble and is therefore well-suit

To solve the problem of thermally-induced frequency drift in burst-mode transmitters for TWDM access networks, we propose a laser with reduced self-heating, and a simple counter-heating method that demonstrates clear improvement in burst-mode BER mea

First real-time 25-Gbit/s burst-mode operation of an integrated SOA-PIN/TIA receiver for future generation T(W)DM-PON is presented. The device has a 2.7-dB better sensitivity than APD photoreceiver and 13-dB better than PIN photoreceiver at this bitr

An experimental real-time reach and split extension of a 28 Gbit/s electrical duobinary TDM-PON is demonstrated. 50 dB budget is achieved using either remote nodes based on SOA or based on a distributed OLT concept.

An overview of PMD challenges in the upstream path of space and service converged TWDM-PON is provided. Simulations and experiments examine interrelations of loss budget, OSNR, dispersion, cross-talk, laser frequency-drifts and co-existence of servic

An overlayed-modulation technique is introduced to increase flexibility and bit rate per carrier wavelength in access networks. FSK/OOK-experimental results realizing 20&30 Gbit/s, up to 40 km fiber transmission, loss budget >30 dB underline the pote

The first NG-PON2 type-A-link OLT transceiver comprising a bi-directional SOA is experimentally assessed. Sufficient downstream transmitter output power and upstream receiver sensitivity is simultaneously demonstrated for E2 budget class. The influen

We propose remote amplification by reusing optical amplifiers in the ONU as in-line amplifiers in a power line independent switched splitter and show that the budget can be substantially increased compared to an unamplified ODN.
