Tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) are formed in tissues targeted by chronic inflammation processes, such as infection and autoimmunity. In Sjögren’s disease, the organization of immune cells into TLS is an important part of disease progression.

The study suggests a link between ICOS-ICOSL signaling and LTa3 induction on T cells. LTa3 subsequently activates fibroblasts in the salivary gland, leading to formation of tertiary lymphoid tissues (TLS).
