An experimental installation for the investigation of the cathode surface in vacuum arcs with a laser monitor is described. This method allows immediate observation of the cathode surface through the layer of luminous plasma. The time resolution of t

A vacuum arc with a stationary diffuse spot on a solid chromium cathode has been studied. The arc current was 30-220 A, cathode temperature 1800-2100 K. The mean current density on the cathode was 10-10/sup 2/ A/cm/sup 2/. The part of thermionic curr

The deformation of the liquid cathode surface in a vacuum arc with a stationary diffuse spot has been studied. The cathode surface has been investigated with help of a laser monitor which allowed observation, in reflected laser light, of the surface
