We report on quantitative measurements of nonlinear (intensity dependent) magneto-optical effects in transverse fields performed in the vicinity of the D 2 -resonance (6S 1 2 →6P 3 2 transition) in Cs vapour using a single-mode laser.

We have investigated the nonlinear Faraday effect near the D2-line of cesium vapour excited by a single-mode laser. The dependence of the rotation angle on laser power, laser frequency and magnetic field was measured, and, for the first time compared

We review the history of the road to a manifestly covariant perturbative calculus within quantum electrodynamics from the early semi-classical results of the mid-twenties to the complete formalism of Stueckelberg in 1934. We chose as our case study t

We have measured the lifetime τ 7S and the static polarizability α 7S of the 7S state of cesium; these quantities yield an approximate empirical determination of the scalar polarizability α, important in the 6S → 7S parity violation experiments.

The capture rates to 12 B ∗ states were measured yielding Γ (1 − ) = 380(100) s −1 , Γ (2 − ) = 120(80) s − and Γ (2 + )= 270(100) s − , in disagreement with published values. A novel technique for measuring the alignment of the 1 −

The polarizations, P/sub av/equivalent/J and P/sub L/equivalent/J, of the /sup 12/B in the reaction /sup 12/C( ..mu../sup -/,..nu..)/sup 12/B(g.s.) have been measured simultaneously, using the method of selective recoil implantation. Their ratio R/su

We report the results of first physics runs of the L3 detector at LEP. Based on 2538 hadron events, we determined the mass m z 0 and the width Γ z 0 of the intermediate vector boson Z 0 to be m z 0 =91.132±0.057 GeV (not including the 46 MeV LEP ma
