A two-year study of recirculating induction heavy-ion accelerators (recirculators) as low-cost drivers for inertial-fusion energy power plants has recently been completed. A summary of that study and other recent work on recirculators is presented.

A two‐year study of recirculating induction heavy ion accelerators as low‐cost driver for inertial‐fusion energy applications was recently completed. The projected cost of a 4 MJ accelerator was estimated to be about $500 M (million) and the ef

The transverse resistive wall instability in the Two-Beam Accelerator (TBA) is investigated analytically and numerically. Without any damping mechanism, we find one to four e-folds in 100 m, depending on the design. It is found that Landau damping, d

The 10 kA ETA and ATA linear induction accelerators are described. Beam instability is the major concern in these high current machines, and the current status of theoretical understanding, and experimental investigations with the 8 cavity ETA, are r

A high-gain, high extraction efficiency, free electron laser (FEL) amplifier operating at the Experimental Test Accelerator (ETA) at 34.6 GHz has demonstrated a small signal gain of 13.4 dB/m. With a 30 kW input signal, the amplifier has produced a s

High-power free electron lasers (FEL's) can be realized using induction linear accelerators as the source of the electron beam. These accelerators are currently capable of producing intense currents (102-104A) at moderately high energy (1-50 MeV). Ex

The design and performance of variable-wiggler, free-electron laser (FEL) amplifiers was studied by using a one-dimensional computer model which incorporated separate sections for design and simulation. Resonant-particle equations were used in the de

A stability analysis is presented for the superconducting levitron stabilized partly by feedback and partly by magnetic coupling to metal plates placed symmetrically above and below the current ring. The system is so designed that eddy currents in th

A method for stabilizing a relativistic coasting beam against the negative mass instability is described. It is shown that a beam above the transition energy can be stabilized, even in the absence of a frequency spread in the beam, by making the wave

A high energy proton-electron-positron colliding beam system (PEP) will be described elsewhere in an invited paper. It is necessary that the proton beam be stored, tightly bunched in longitudinal space, for many hours. Since there is almost no dampin
