1. The data of a detailed x-ray-diffraction study of 1-trimethylsilyl- and trimethyl-germyl-o-carboranes show that the Si-C and Ge-C bonds between the carborane ring and the substituent are larger than the bonds in the substituent itself, and CH3 gro

We have carried out a complete x-ray structural analysis of (CCH3)2B10H8(CH3)2, one of the products resulting from the methylation of aminated dianions of 1,2-dimethyl-o-carborane, and have shown that the compound with all methyl groups joined to the

The intramolecular rearrangement involved in the electrophilic methylation of 7,8-B9C2H112− leads after protonation to the methyl derivative of a new isomer of dicarba-nido-undecaborane(13). By an X-ray structure analysis the latter compound is sho

The behaviour of the dianions from o-, m- and p-carboranes and of their C-methyl derivatives was studied by means of 11B NMR spectroscopy. The specificity of carborane “redox” isomerization through the dianions is discussed.

The structures, methods of synthesis, and chemical properties of closo- and nido-carboranes are discussed and certain general features of the chemical reactions of carboranes are indicated. The bibliography includes 228 references.

By a complete x-ray diffraction examination of 1-tert-butyl-o-carborane (I) and 1-trimethylsilyl-2-methyl-o-carborane (II), it was found that the bonds between the substituants and the icosahedral skeleton are elongated. The tert-butyl substituent in
