Data on the genetic basis of the classification of Shigella flexneri serological variants 1-5 are presented. Subserovars "a" are related to monolysogenic variants of the basic lipopolysaccharide (LPS) structure 0 antigen 3,4, "b" to bilysogenic ones.

It is shown that the genetic determinants of type-specific antigens 1 to V of Shigella flexneri controlling similar functions are localized near the lactose-fermentation region on the chromosome; the determinant of antigen VI lies beyond it. The auth

With respect to Shigella flexneri, serovar 6 should be transferred to S. boydii; serovar 5 should be divided into two subserovars, 5a and 5b, with antigenic formulas V:(4) and V:7, respectively; and serovar 3 should contain only two subserovars, 3a-I

The investigation covered three genetically associated cultural groups, which included the following strains: 1) ty2 and ty2-trypaflavine, an avirulent mutant devoid of the Vi-antigen, derived from the first under the effect of trypaflavine; 2) ty58-
