Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) is a commonly used technique to measure the temperature and density of atoms or molecules in a gas. In this work, we demonstrate that the TDLAS diagnostics could be effectively applied to measure th

The common description of kinetic effects in low-pressure plasmas is based on the Boltzmann equation. This applies especially to the description of Ohmic (collisional) and non-local (stochastic/collisionless) electron heating, where the Boltzmann equ

Monitoring and investigating the fusion plasma in ITER will be crucial to pave the way to a fusion power plant. However, the harsh conditions in the vacuum vessel are detrimental for the optical diagnostics systems. Replacing the element with a direc

This is the second part of a set of two papers on radio-frequency (RF) discharges, part of a larger series on the foundations of plasma and discharge physics. In the first paper (Chabert et al 2021 Plasma Sources Sci. Technol. 30 024001) the two basi

The understanding of the ro-vibrational dynamics in molecular (near)-atmospheric pressure plasmas is essential to investigate the influence of vibrational excited molecules on the discharge properties. In a companion paper Kuhfeld et al (2021 J. Phys

The non-equilibrium ro-vibrational distribution functions of molecules in a plasma can heavily influence the discharge operation and the plasma-chemistry. A convenient method for measuring the distribution function is coherent anti-Stokes Raman scatt

The inductively coupled array (INCA) discharge is a plasma source with a tailored electric field configuration that allows efficient stochastic heating of the electrons. The desired field configuration is realized by an array of small planar coils. T

A single particle three dimensional Monte Carlo model of a periodic array of inductively coupled plasmas is presented in the paper. Analytical calculations show that in such sources the periodic field structure produces certain electron resonances in
