Abstract Harnessing non-spatial properties of photons as if they represent an additional independent coordinate underpins the emerging synthetic dimension approach. It enables probing of higher-dimensional physical models within low-dimensional devic

H0-type photonic crystal nanocavities hold high quality factors Q and quite small cavity mode volumes. This study finds their ultrahigh Q structures, which allow stable operation as a nanolaser even with fabrication-induced disordering. Previously, w

The GaInAsP semiconductor photonic crystal nanolaser operates at room temperature by photopumping and emits near-infrared light at a wavelength longer than 1.3 μm. Immersion of the nanolaser in a solution causes its laser characteristics to change.

Optical modulators for optical interconnects require a small size, small voltage, high speed and wide working spectrum. For this purpose, we developed Si slow-light Mach-Zehnder modulators via a 180 nm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor process.

Mach–Zehnder optical modulators are the key devices for high-speed electrical-to-optical conversion in Si photonics. Si rib waveguides with a p–n diode structure operated in the carrier depletion mode have mainly been developed as their phase shi

We propose and demonstrate a simple all-optic control for Si photonics using a photo-thermal heater. The control light is absorbed in a heavily doped control waveguide and the signal light phase is tuned through thermal diffusion in a signal waveguid

We have developed a nonmechanical beam scanner equipped with a Si photonics slow-light grating toward an on-chip frequency-modulated continuous-wave light detection and ranging (FMCW LIDAR) device. An optical beam is scanned thermo-optically, but it
