Helium isotopes from groundwater and hot springs at the stratovolcano, Unzen, have a stronger mantle signature than for the nearby caldera volcano, Aso, which suggests that magma at Unzen is younger still supplied with primordial mantle helium.

Hot thermal fluids flow through the Earth's crust and carry valuable information about the deep subsurface. The monitoring of natural tracers transported in geothermal fluids, such as gases or ions, are relevant to better understand the geological pr

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is considered a key technology for reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. Nonetheless, there are concerns that if injected CO2 migrates in the crust, it may trigger slip of pre-existing faults. In order to test i

Here, we report the groundwater oxygen isotope anomalies caused by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake (MJMA7.3) that occurred in Southwest Japan on April 16, 2016. One hundred and seventeen groundwater samples were collected from a deep well located 3 km t

In order to evaluate the behavior of a freshwater lens in the uplifted atoll island of Minami-Daito, Japan, groundwater level and electrical conductivity were simultaneously measured in six monitoring wells. The monitoring allowed determination of th
