To date, experimental demonstrations of PT-symmetric systems have been restricted to one dimension. Here, the authors experimentally realize and characterize a two-dimensional PT-symmetric system using photonic lattice waveguides with judiciously des

Topological insulators constitute a newly characterized state of matter that contains scatter-free edge states surrounding an insulating bulk. Conventional wisdom regards the insulating bulk as essential, because the invariants that describe the topo

The hallmark of topological insulators is the scatter-free propagation of waves in topologically protected edge channels. This transport is strictly chiral on the outer edge of the medium, and therefore capable of bypassing sharp corners and imperfec

We demonstrate photonic structures supporting topological edge-states propagating in full 3D. These robust edge-states propagate in a screw motion in a 3D topological insulator with two spatial dimensions and one synthetic dimension.

We demonstrate experimentally dispersionless flat bands with parity-time symmetiy. To this end, we employ precisely tailored losses in laser-written waveguide arrays as key ingredient to manage light propagation and suppress diffractive broadening.

The capability to temporarily arrest the propagation of optical signals is one of the main challenges hampering the ever more widespread use of light in rapid long-distance transmission as well as all-optical on-chip signal processing or computations

Non-Hermitian physics, and in particular its well-known representative of PT-symmetry, is a field of great interest in current research. Photonics allows for the implementation of its associated complex potentials by means of judiciously distributed

The first experimental realization of topological insulators [1] constituted the advent of an entirely new field of physics. Their hallmark feature — scatter-free, unidirectional edge states — are of great interest for a wide range of application

The condition of real eigenvalue spectra in quantum mechanics is usually met by requiring operators to be Hermitian. This perception was challenged in 1988 by Carl M. Bender and Stefan Boettcher, who showed that parity-time (PT) symmetric Hamiltonian
