Abstract Two-dimensional materials have unusual properties and promise applications in nanoelectronics, spintronics, photonics, (electro)catalysis, separations, and elsewhere. Most are inorganic and their properties are difficult to tune. Here we rep

Two-dimensional (2D) organic materials offer atomic precision for optoelectronics and energy-efficient nanoelectronics, but most are not easily patterned and tuned. The long-sought porphene [C20N4H2)∞, 1] has now been prepared in a hole-doped form

We report an investigation of structure and photophysics of thin layers of cibalackrot, a sturdy dye derived from indigo by double annulation at the central double bond. Evaporated layers contain up to three phases, two crystalline and one amorphous.

In situ grazing-incidence X-ray scattering shows that a monolayer of artificial rod-shaped dipolar molecular rotors produced on the surface of an aqueous subphase in a Langmuir trough has a structure conducive to a 2D ferroelectric phase. The axes of

Proving the structures of charged metallacages obtained by metal ion coordination-driven solution self-assembly is challenging, and the common use of routine NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry is unreliable. Carefully determined diffusion coeffic

Gold surface attachment of altitudinal molecular rotors provided with ten −HgSCH2CH2SCH3 “tentacles” has been monitored with ellipsometry, scanning tunneling microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The rotors appear to adsorb on

Gold surfaces carrying altitudinal molecular rotors firmly attached through sulfur and/or mercury atoms have been examined by IR spectroscopy. The presence of an intact rotator has been confirmed and its average orientation with respect to the gold s

We have measured the dielectric response of monolayer films of surface mounted chloromethyl- and dichloromethylsilyl dipolar rotors on fused silica at frequencies in the 1 kHz range and temperatures from 4 to 300 K. The torsional potentials, calculat
