The gain efficiency of a fully optimized erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is calculated as a function of the fiber numerical aperture and dopant confinement in the core and is shown to agree well with experimental data. A gain efficiency of 8.9 dB
The expansion of optical telecommunication networks and the increasing demand for Erbium Doped Fibre Amplifiers together with the advent of fibre to the home has underlined the need for versatile high performance optical switches. However, currently

We report on the demonstration of optical fibres based on the Ga:La:S system. Core-clad structures have now been fabricated by the rod and tube method and pulled into lengths over 200 metres. Transmission over the wavelength range 1.0 to 6.5 microns,

The majority of optical fibre now installed in Europe and North America operates in the second telecommunications window, centred at 1.32 microns. In this region, fibre loss reaches one of its minima and chromatic dispersion is negligible. Unlike tra

An Extended X-ray Absorption Fine-Structure Study Of The Rare-Earth Sites In A Neodymium Doped Glass
The local environment around the metal sites in a Nd doped aluminosilicate glass has been determined using extended x-ray absorption fine structure. Detailed fitting of the spectrum reveals an average Nd coordination of 4.5 +/- 1 oxygen atoms at 2.15

It has not been generally appreciated that the erbium-doped fibre amplifier (EDFA) has both a saturation output power which increases with pump power, as well as an ability to operate deep in saturation without signal distortion and interchannel cros

The ratio of absorption to emission cross-section is determined for Er3+ doped fibres. This parameter, essential in modelling optical amplifiers, is found to be significantly different from previously published values. Reasons for this are discussed.

Ground-state and excited-state absorption spectra covering the wavelength range of 450-1050 nm are presented for erbium-doped silica fibers with four different core codopants: GeO2, GeO2/B2O3, GeO2/P2O5, and Al2O3. It is shown that the host glass inf
