Isolation of the smooth (Sm) morphotype of Peptostreptococcus micros, a suspected oral pathogen, is sometimes accompanied by isolation of a rough (Rg) morphotype of P. micros. The Rg type readily changes to a Sm-like variant (RgSm) in broth culture.
