In this paper, we show that there can be four wave mixing between three solitons having different, but equally spaced, frequencies. While this does not happen with solitons in a uniform lossless fiber, we show that in a transmission line with loss an

Transmission of 50-psec solitons in a 75-km recirculating loop of dispersion-shifted fiber (D = 1.38 psec/nm/km at lambda(s)), using low-gain erbium amplifiers spaced 25 km apart, displays jitter in pulse arrival times consistent with low error rates

One attractive feature of the all-optical approach to ultra long-distance transmission is that it greatly facilitates wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). It is known that solitons of different velocities are transparent to each other. It is shown

It is shown both analytically and by numerical simulation, that solitons can traverse great distances through a chain of lumped amplifiers connecting dispersion shifted fiber spans. The fiber spans can also have large fractional variations in D. The

We have done extensive experiments with dense (25-GHz channel spacing) high speed, (individual channel rates of 2.5 and 5.0 GB/s) soliton WDM over transoceanic distances. The experiments were performed in a loop 1400 to 2400 km in length with a 45 km

In commercial applications of soliton communications systems with sliding-frequency guiding filters, a method for line-monitoring (LM) and fault location is required. We propose a novel LM system which is compatible with such systems. The LM channel

We have observed the intersymbol interference (ISI) induced on a signal due to traversing a fiber Bragg grating having periodic delay ripple. A simple model of the grating transfer function agrees well with the observed ISI behavior.

The nonlinear Kerr interaction between the signal and noise generated by erbium-doped fibre amplifiers in ultralong all-optical lightwave systems, is analysed. The authors show that by optimising the fibre dispersion along the transmission line, the

We show that nonlinear coupling between signal and ASE noise in long-haul WDM dispersion-managed transmission is a significant impairment which limits the amount of accumulated dispersion that can be tolerated. A variety of dispersion compensation sc
