We investigate modal gain differences of a graded-index EDFA for different mode counts in a system upgrade scenario. We find that the mode dependent gain can decrease with the number of modes.

We propose a spatial gain equalization strategy for multimode EDFAs which considers transversally non-uniform saturation. Characteristic minima of the MDG are observed along the fiber. The fiber length is adjusted to achieve low MDG.
