Energy levels of ion beam sputtered hafnia mixed with alumina or silica were investigated by photoluminescence at 193 nm. The emission spectra originating from interstitial defects and oxygen vacancies were correlated to residual optical properties.

Third harmonic generation is demonstrated in a novel dielectric mirror made of aperiodic layers of Hf x Al y O and SiO 2 . One percent conversion has been measured with 70-fs pulses and efficiencies larger than ten percent seem possible.

Laser-Induced Damage in Optical Materials: 2015.
The push for ever more powerful and shorter laser pulse sources demands optical coatings that can handle large bandwidths while operating near the threshold of permanent damage. We review some of the current challenges in the understanding of film be

In an effort to develop next generation UV frequency conversion systems, several steps have to be considered. One aspect crucial for the final conversion stage is a durable coating which shows high resistance for all incident wavelengths. In the regu

We present Ytterbium-doped CaF2 as a laser active material with good prospects for high-power operation in thin-disk laser configuration owing to its favorable thermal properties. Thanks to its broad emission bandwidth the material is also suitable f

Practically all thin film systems for normal incidence can be realized using only two-layer materials. But for oblique incidence, polarization effects occur, designs may become complex, and polarization control is difficult or impossible to achieve.
