Frugivorous primates are known to encounter many problems to cope with habitat degradation, due to the fluctuating spatial and temporal distribution of their food resources. Since lemur communities evolved strategies to deal with periods of food scar

Among primates, only two lemur genera, Eulemur and Hapalemur, and a population of the platyrrhine Aotus azarai are known to be cathemeral (i.e. show a mixture of daytime and night-time activity). Given the rarity of this phenomenon in primates except

Researchers have proposed several hypotheses to explain pair-living in primates. In particular, when males are not involved in direct parental care, pair-living may be related to female dispersal, infanticide prevention, or male mate/resource defense

Animals show specific morphological, physiological and behavioural adaptations to diurnal or nocturnal activity. Cathemeral species, i.e. animals with activities distributed over the 24-h period, have to compromise between these specific adaptations.

The nutritional value of food resources represents one of the crucial facets of habitat quality that has to be investigated to predict primate persistence in forest fragments. Mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) are known to be tolerant to hab

Most theories on the function of play have focused on ultimate rather than proximate benefits. Play peaks during juvenility but, in some species, it is present in adulthood as well. In primates, social play and grooming often show a matched pattern b

The present investigation aims to assess the changes in both social interaction and sex steroids excreted in feces of group-living Japanese macaques and rhesus monkeys. By comparing profiles of estrone conjugates (E1C) and pregnanediol-glucuronide (P
