A 4-dimensional variational data assimilation (4D-Var) scheme for the HIgh Resolution Limited Area Model (HIRLAM) forecasting system is described in this article. The innovative approaches to the multi-incremental formulation, the weak digital filter

Atmospheric moisture-related information obtained from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) observations from ground-based receiver stations of the Nordic GNSS Analysis Centre (NGAA) have been used within a state-of-the-art km-scale numerical we

To fill the gap in the observation system for humidity, the HIRLAM–ALADIN Research on Mesoscale Operational NWP in Euromed (HARMONIE) limited-area high-resolution kilometer-scale model has been prepared for assimilation of Global Navigation Satelli

We present a numerical study of a polar low which hit western Iceland in January 2007, with heavy snowfall and mean wind speeds exceeding 20 m s−1 in several locations. The operational models at the time captured the polar low formation rather well

We present a reformulation of the humidity part of the HIRLAM (HIgh-Resolution Limited-Area Model) variational data assimilation. The purpose is to rectify some of the shortcomings of the present formulation which uses specific humidity, q, as an ass

A 3-dimensional variational data assimilation (3D-Var) scheme for the HIgh Resolution Limited Area Model (HIRLAM) forecasting system is described. The HIRLAM 3D-Var is based on the minimization of a cost function that consists of one term J(b). which

The evolution of a deep North Atlantic cyclone, which caused devastating avalanches in northwest (NW) Iceland in October 1995, was investigated. As the main tool for this investigation, potential vorticity analysis was used. This allows the quantific

In the first study of a series of studies of intense cyclones in the active region around Iceland, the explosive synoptic-scale “Greenhouse Low” that hit Iceland on 3 February 1991 is studied. We have investigated this cyclone mainly through nume
