We study the Gaussian statistical models whose log-likelihood function has a unique complex critical point, i.e., has maximum likelihood degree one. We exploit the connection developed by Am\'endola et. al. between the models having maximum likelihoo

We show that there are $O(n \cdot 4^{n/11})$ planar graphs on $n$ vertices which do not admit a simultaneous straight-line embedding on any $n$-point set in the plane. In particular, this improves the best known bound $O(n!)$ significantly.

We consider the problem of learning a directed graph $G^\star$ from observational data. We assume that the distribution which gives rise to the samples is Markov and faithful to the graph $G^\star$ and that there are no unobserved variables. We do no

We study the problem of maximum likelihood estimation of densities that are log-concave and lie in the graphical model corresponding to a given undirected graph $G$. We show that the maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) is the product of the exponential

In this paper we study the set of tensors that admit a special type of decomposition called an orthogonal tensor train decomposition. Finding equations defining varieties of low-rank tensors is generally a hard problem, however, the set of orthogonal

In this thesis, we study three problems, each of which concerns inferring certain pieces of information from some observed data. We apply tools arising from algebraic geometry, statistics, and combinatorics to approach these problems. In Chapter 2, w
