We analyze the nonlinear optical response of a four-level atomic system driven into a tripod configuration. The large cross-Kerr nonlinearities that occurr in such a system are shown to produce nonlinear phase shift of order $\pi$. Such a substantial

This paper reports on the use of a local order measure to quantify the spatial ordering of a quantum dot array (QDA). By means of electron ground state energy analysis in a quantum dot pair, it is demonstrated that the length scale required for such

We propose a scheme to generate a large Kerr nonlinearity based on electromagnetically induced transparency in a single atom placed in a high-finesse microcavity. We perform a thorough analysis of the system dynamics using a dressed states approach.

We present a quantum repeater scheme that uses gradient echo memory and probabilistic noiseless amplification. We show that a quantum memory can process quantum information and a noiseless amplifier can distill entanglement.
Superradiance, the enhanced collective emission of energy from a coherent ensemble of quantum systems, has been typically studied in atomic ensembles. In this work we study theoretically the enhanced emission of energy from coherent ensembles of harm

Large nonlinearity at the single-photon level can pave the way for the implementation of universal quantum gates. However, realizing large and noiseless nonlinearity at such low light levels has been a great challenge for scientists in the past decad

We propose a scheme for continuous variable entanglement purification using the interaction of two-mode squeezed beams with cold trapped atomic ensembles. In the limit of very large number of atoms, a collective atomic ensemble excitation becomes a c

The very small size of optical nonlinearities places strict restrictions on the types of novel physics one can explore. This work describes how a single artificial multilevel Cooper pair box molecule, interacting with a superconducting microwave copl
