Ultrafine particles (smaller than about 0.1 μm) are often emitted from combustion and other high-temperature processes in the form of fractal-like aggregates composed of solid nanoparticles. Results of a study of atmospheric aggregates are reported.

The submicron atmospheric aerosol carries short-lived, reactive chemical species, including hydrogen peroxide and organic peroxides, at concentrations as high as 1 mM in the associated water. This conclusion is based on equilibrium calculations and (

The effect of turbulent mixing on the homogeneous nucleation rate was studied for a jet stream at 400 K injected into dry air at 298 K and 1 atm. To simplify the calculations, it was assumed that the Lewis number was everywhere unity. Probability den

An expression for the interception efficiency is derived for particles in boundary layer flows over single spheres and cylinders. The analysis is carried out by determining the point of closest approach of a streamline to the collector surface. Parti

An aerosol reactor is a gaseous system in which fine particles are formed by chemical reaction in either a batch or flow process. The particle sizes of interest range from less than 10 A (molecular clusters) to 10μm. Such reactors may be operated to

The method of particle analysis by mass spectrometry has been applied to the quantitative measurement of sodium chloride in individual particles on a real-time basis. Particles of known masses are individually introduced, in the form of a beam, into
