The unexpected finding of a strong magnetic field dependence of the dielectric properties of insulating glasses at very low temperatures has been a puzzling problem since its discovery. Several attempts have been made to explain this striking phenome

Shear horizontally polarized acoustic plate modes (SHPAPM) were used for the detection of water pollution with engine oil. The changes in the SHPAPM attenuation caused by presence of the pollutant film on the water surface were monitored. Excellent s

Neutron-irradiated quartz is a promising model system to learn more about the low-energy excitations (tunneling states) in vitreous silica and in similar glasses. We present the first systematic study of the elastic properties of neutron-irradiated q

A contactless surface acoustic (SAW) wave device and its application as gas sensor is presented. The surface acoustic wave is excited and detected inductively, so that no bonding wires are required. In order to show the suitability of this type of de

We present results of low-frequency acoustic (vibrating reed) measurements on quartz crystals irradiated with six different neutron doses up to 2×10 20 n/cm 2 in the temperature range from 7 mK to 1 K. From the temperature dependence of the sound ve

At low temperatures glasses exhibit a variety of surprising properties. They are attributed to the existence of low-energy excitations which are caused by the tunneling of small atomic clusters. With decreasing temperature the interaction between the

Films of argon and neon were prepared on a cold substrate by quench-condensation from the gas phase onto a surface acoustic wave device operated at 630 MHz. On annealing above the condensation temperature strong changes of the sound velocity occur in

The low temperature dynamic behavior of glasses is determined by tunneling systems which can be considered as small clusters of atoms moving in double-well potentials. Below 1 K this motion is generally described as a coherent tunneling through the b
